BTT Can you talk a little bit about the mock-up and carded sample process?
HASBRO For carded samples, very often the factory that is producing a wave of figures will do other toy work as well, even [for] competitors. Usually you will be seeing their test scrap recycled to be used as mock-ups. There are usually two stages to the development of the packaging: the sales sample, or "comp" stage, where a white box or crude pasted-up sample is generated to go into the retail planogram or to show the buyer what the product will look like. A comp may also be generated to look at a new structure, get the concept approved with Lucasfilm, or to look at an alternate or future idea that may not go into production. These comps are always destroyed and rarely get out of our chain and into circulation. The second type of early packaging is the factory-created test sample, or pilot. These will be done with whatever material is on hand if the film isn't ready...that's where you see the crazy colored, often competitive packaging. These are send to our engineers for approval for layout, materials, contruction, ability to pass transit intact, and the like. These are usually destroyed, but some of these have leaked to the public in years past.
